Conclusions

We have successfully enabled a VPN server on DNS Safety running in the Internet, added and then deployed secure VPN profiles for our mobile devices and are now able to perform DNS filtering of all traffic in the cellular/mobile 4G/5G network connections.

The following notes are worth mentioning.

  • Try adding IP addresses of the mobile devices to the list of device labels in Admin UI / DNS Server / Settings / Device Labels. This will allow you to see the actual devices names in traffic reports.
  • Configure different level of filtering (a filtering policy) for different categories of devices, for example, restrict access to adult only sites for a child owned device and try enforcing the Safe Search on Google services and restricted mode on YouTube.
  • It should also be possible to configure the Always-On VPN with Apple Configurator for fully managed (child) devices.
